An apartment in Knokke by the sea, designed to age beautifully over time.

Updated: Mar 2

In Knokke, where the sea leaves a fine layer of salt on windows and terraces, I had the pleasure of shaping an apartment for clients with a deep love for vintage pieces and noble materials. No fleeting trends. No decorative noise. Just character, texture, and quiet confidence.

A Nearly Black and White Dialogue

The brief was clear: material guidance for the kitchen, bathrooms, and sanitary spaces. The intention was more layered. We wanted to explore contrast. Dark, almost black wood against lighter marble surfaces. A near black and white composition, softened by texture and warmth.

The foundation of the project became wengé stained wood. Deep, smoky, almost ink dark, yet revealing warm undertones when touched by light. Against this, we introduced beige marble with black veining, like fine brushstrokes running through stone. The result feels graphic yet organic, bold yet balanced.

Kitchen

In the kitchen, the choice settled on dark wengé toned wood cabinetry combined with beige marble animated by black veins. The contrast creates rhythm. The wood grounds the space, giving it weight and intimacy, while the marble lifts it, reflecting light and adding refinement.

For taps and appliances, we leaned into the monochrome language. Black fixtures were selected to reinforce the visual coherence and to echo the darker wood tones. Integrated appliances were chosen with a discreet presence, allowing materials to take the lead rather than technology. The kitchen becomes less of a machine and more of a composed landscape of surfaces.

Lighting was treated as a material in its own right. Warm, indirect light enhances the depth of the wood and softens the stone’s veining. Subtle under cabinet lighting allows the marble to glow gently in the evening, transforming the space from functional to atmospheric.

Bathroom

In the bathroom, the combination of dark wood and marble reappears in the vanity. The statement sink, with its strong material expression, anchors the room. To soften its pronounced character, we opted for matte, uniform beige finishes in the showers. These quieter surfaces create breathing space and prevent the composition from becoming too intense.

Black tapware was chosen to continue the black and white narrative throughout the sanitary spaces. The repetition of this detail ties the apartment together, creating continuity without monotony.

Timeless rather than trendy interior

The final interior feels timeless rather than trendy. A careful balance between strength and serenity. Dark wood provides depth and intimacy. Marble introduces light and refinement. Black accents draw precise lines through the composition.

An apartment by the sea, grounded in contrast, shaped by material, and designed to age beautifully over time.
