This charming home in Canillas de Aceituno was originally built with two bedrooms, one bathroom, and a separate office. When the new owners purchased the property with the intention of renting it out as a holiday home, they immediately saw untapped potential.
Their goal was clear: increase the rental value and make the property more attractive to guests.
The solution? Transform the existing office into an additional bedroom with its own ensuite bathroom.
Next to the office was a large storage space, accessible only from outside the house. By carrying out some strategic demolition work, we divided this storage room in two. One half remained storage, while the other half was integrated into the former office to create a compact yet fully functional bathroom.
With one relatively small structural intervention, the house gained an extra bedroom and bathroom instantly making it far more appealing and competitive in the holiday rental market.
This is exactly what smart design is about: recognizing hidden opportunities and maximizing a property’s potential.
Bedroom - Light, Space & Freshness
The bedroom originally felt quite dark due to the heavy, dark wooden ceiling beams and large wooden wardrobe doors.
Rather than removing these character elements, we enhanced them.
By painting the beams and wardrobe doors white, we preserved their architectural presence while dramatically increasing the sense of light and space. The room immediately felt more open, airy, and welcoming; essential qualities in a holiday home where guests want to feel relaxed from the moment they walk in.
This approach allowed us to respect the home’s rustic charm while giving it a brighter, more contemporary atmosphere.
Kitchen – Simple Changes, Strong Impact
The kitchen layout was perfectly functional, so there was no need for a full renovation.
Instead, we focused on visual impact.
The dark ceiling beams were painted white, just as in the bedroom, creating continuity throughout the house and enhancing the feeling of height and space. The kitchen cabinets were given a fresh coat of paint, instantly modernizing the room without replacing perfectly good materials.
We also painted the windows and interior shutters white, increasing the reflection of natural light and giving the space a lighter, more contemporary character.
Sometimes the most effective transformations are not about replacing, but about reimagining what is already there.
Garden Table – From Weathered to Statement Piece
One of our favorite elements of this project was the transformation of an old wooden garden table.
Years of rain and intense sun had left the wooden planks worn and tired. Instead of discarding it, we chose to reinvent it.
We mounted a custom iron frame and added a solid base. On top of this, we created a mosaic surface using floor tiles in different colors. The result? A modern, artistic outdoor table with personality and durability.
This piece now adds character to the outdoor space and reflects our belief that design can be both sustainable and creative.
Increasing Value Through Thoughtful Design
This project perfectly illustrates how targeted design decisions can significantly increase both functionality and rental appeal.
By:
Adding an extra bedroom and bathroom
Brightening dark architectural elements
Modernizing existing features instead of replacing them
And creatively repurposing materials
…we transformed this house into a more attractive, market-ready holiday home without unnecessary structural overhauls.
